Enigma/ action code: Enigma codes are codes that create questions for the audience, which are answered later on in the film. Action codes are the opposite. They are significant events in a film that move the narrative on in a particular direction.
The Hermeneutic code: The Hermeneutic code is similar to the enigma code. This is something in a film that creates an unanswered question and something that can not be explained. However in this code the questions are not always answered later on in the film.
The cultural code: The culture code is signs and codes in a film that the audience will understand because of their culture. Much like pragmatics, the culture code requires shared cultural knowledge in order for the audience to understand what is being presented to them.
The semantic code: The semantic code focuses on the linguistics of language and logic in film. Again, this can link in with the enigma and hermeneutic codes.
