Analyzing clip from The Office

Genre: Drama-comedy

The first character you see in the clip is Keith Bishop. He is represented as a dry and emotionless character, who obviously does not care about the interview. This is shown in the mis en scene, as he obviously does not care about the interview or the environment he is in. The clip is shot in quite a darkly lit room, which represents the rather dry sense of humor of the show, and the moods of the characters (boredom.)

Diegetic dialogue is used, and there is no music in the background, which again helps show the “still” mood of the room. This lack of music also helps put emphasis on the dialogue that is being said, and allows the audience to listen to every word.

The shot’s used in the clip range from medium shot’s to close shot’s to over the shoulder shots. This range of shot’s help to show the different reactions of the characters, and adds to the comedic value as we see the confusion of the characters from several different perspectives. It also is quite contradictory, as the range of camera angles and the energetic filming does not contrast at all with the very still, slow dialogue. This creates a rather clumsy feel to the clip, which adds to the comedic value and makes the scene funnier to the audience.
